Getting Enough Iodine
An American study from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida has established that vegans are at risk of low Iodine. Also a UK Study by the British Thyroid Association has found similar results in teenage girls where iodine levels are too low.
The problem is that iodine in large amounts can cause health problems as can low amount of iodine. It can cause problems with the Thyroid and can be a problem in pregnancy and brain development of the child.
From the NHS
What happens if I take too much iodine? Taking high doses of iodine for long periods of time could change the way your thyroid gland works. This can lead to a wide range of different symptoms, such as weight gain.
From what i have read is that a varied diet should give you what we need. The NHS recommend a daily intake of 0.14mg per day.
Dairy Milk is a good source for vegetarians and for vegans seaweed and green leafy vegetables are the way to go.
Some companies add iodine to salt. Many countries whose populations suffer with low Iodine have now, as standard added iodine to the salt supply. There are also dietary supplements available.
I would suggest you check with your GP or medical practitioner before taking supplements to be sure.
