Meat with your Vegetarian Meal?
After many years as a veggie I have learned not to trust restaurants who are not all vegetarian to prepare my food. I will only eat in veggie restaurants and there is a news story today that has just reinforced my deepest concerns.
Someone went for a meal in a restaurant in Preston, they ordered a soup that was labelled vegetarian, only to find that it had chunks of beef in it and made with beef stock. Even worse when they complained the restaurant did not seem to care. Here is a link to the original article. Diners anger at meat in vegetarian starter.
The truth is it is really difficult to prepare veggie food in a place that serves meat, staff make mistakes, also there is the issue of cross contamination, food splashes into each other, so the chances are, that even with best efforts, your food could contain meat in some way.
I have had similar bitter experiences. So I personally refuse to eat in meat serving places. Plus the fact I really like to support the vegetarian and vegan restaurants as it is not easy for them to compete.
There are some fantastic restaurants out there that are completely vegan and vegetarian so I feel strongly that we should support them or we could lose this option in the future.
