London Veggie Italian Restaurant
Recently I visited Amico Bio, a cosy rustic Italian Vegetarian Restaurant located near the Barbican Tube Station in London. The food is rustic and tasty.
It was very busy and we did have to wait a few minutes for a table even though we had booked, we did not mind this as it is good to see such a busy veggie place.
For starter we shared a bruschetta al pomodoro, Cauliflower fritters and focaccia bread and olives. The tomatoes were very fresh and tasty, the bread was pleasant but not as good as it has been in the past when I have had a meal there. Also the bread and olive portion seemed quite small. The cauliflower fritters were a delight, very crispy and fresh, it was just missing a dip or something.
For the main course we went for a Bean and Potato Cake on braised cabbage and carrot salad, Tempura of Seasonal Vegetables with a sweet and sour sauce. The potato cake I have to admit was OK but a little bland, the tempura was crispy and delicious.
Finally the dessert, I don’t understand why, but every time I have visited this restaurant they do not have any dessert for vegans other than soya ice cream or a fruit sorbet. We tried the fruit sorbet which was melon. To be honest I could take it or leave it, it was OK at best. They sell all sorts of wonderful tarts and cakes for vegetarians, which in my experience are very easy to adapt to be vegan.
On the upside I have had much better meals at Amico Bio, here is a link to a previous review. I will definitely go again as I have had some really good food here.
The wines are clearly marked vegan and the options are really good, even the lower priced wines taste lovely. The menu labels food suitable for vegans and food that is Gluten Free.
Starters are around £5.50 Mains around £8.00 Wine around £20 per bottle.
The staff are very good and pleasant, the owner is himself a vegetarian so does have a good understanding. I suggest that you book a table because they are very busy.
