Vegan Chicken Style Nuggets

Chicken flavour bite size nuggets made with vegetable protein from Frys Vegetarian.  These come in a large 300gram pack from the freezer, so you can cook a few at a time.  They taste pretty good, I am not sure if they taste like chicken as I have no idea what that is like.  They are perfect for dipping in ketchup and I would have them with some chips or salad.  The texture is firm but not too chewy and the outer is crispy breadcrumbs.

Each 300gram box is suitable for vegans and vegetarians,  Vegan and Vegetarian Society Approved.  You can oven cook, fry, barbecue or grill them.  Cholesterol Free.  Per nugget is 37kcal.   Sold in health food shops.

Eastmans Cinema Style Popcorn

Vegan Sweet Popcorn

Popped maize kernels with sugar coating from Eastmans ( a Tesco Brand).  I have to say this is a really good shop bought popcorn.  It is crispy and light,  it is sweet but not too sweet and it tastes great.  It comes in a huge bag, perfect for movie night and for sharing.  It is cooked in sunflower oil.

Each 200gram pack is suitable for vegetarians,  vegan as far as I can tell (ingredients are maize, sugar and sunflower oil).  Per 50gram serving a quarter of the pack is 235kcal.  Sold in Tesco Supermarkets.

Tesco Meat Free Nut Cutlets

Vegan Nut Cutlets

A blend of mixed vegetables, peanuts, hazelnuts and almonds, a pack of 4 nut cutlets from Tesco.  I like that Tesco are now labelling Vegan.  These nut cutlets are fine,  they are not the best i have tried but they do a good job.  Perfect for a Sunday lunch or festive meal.  They are pretty basic and are more like a nut burger than a cutlet.  They fall apart quite easy but the texture is OK,  the nuts are slightly crunchy and the vegetables are acceptable.  They are good value,  I bought mine the a any 2 for £3 offer.

Each 350gram pack of 4 nut cutlets are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  Per nut cutlet is 235kcal.  Cook from frozen in the oven for 24minutes.   Vegetarian Society Approved.

Levi Roots Caribbean Mix

Reggae Reggae Vegan Snack

Savoury biscuit strings mixed with roasted peanuts, banana chips and coconut coated with a Caribbean seasoning from Levi Roots Reggae Reggae range.   This is a bit like a sweet bombay mix,  it tastes really pleasant and is very moreish,  definitely will be buying this again.  It makes a great party food, or vegan snack.

Each 110gram pack is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  Per 100grams is 514kcal.  Sold in supermarkets.  I got mine in Tesco.

Cauldron Aduki Bean Kievs

Vegan Kievs

Aduki bean kievs with spinach, mushrooms and spices filled with mango chutney and coated in breadcrumbs from Cauldron Foods.   I have not seen these before and I think they are a good idea,  however I did not enjoy them.  The kiev itself is OK,  crunchy and beany but the mango filling to my taste is too sweet and sickly.  It does not work as a flavour combination.  I think they could come up with a better version than this.  They take 3o minutes in the oven to cook through from frozen.

Each pack of 2 Kievs is suitable for vegetarians, vegan as far as I can tell.  Per Kiev is 223kcal.  Sold in the freezer at supermarkets,  I got mine in Tesco Vegetarian freezer section.

Cooperative Microwave Long Grain Rice

Vegan Ready Made Rice

A microwave pouch of long grain white rice from the Cooperative supermarket.   This is ideal when you are in a hurry as it only takes a minute and a half in the microwave.  The quality of the rice is OK not fantastic,  there are definitely better versions out there like the Tilda which  I reviewed earlier.  This Coop rice is good with currys, in soups or stews or with a sweet and sour dish.

Each 250gram pouch serves at least 2 people,   400kcal per pouch.  Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.  Microwaves in approx 2 minutes.  Sold in the Cooperative.

Vegan Orange Cupcakes

Vegan Cup Cake Recipe

These cakes are really simple to make and taste great.  My recipe makes 9 good size cup cakes or 12 smaller ones.

225grams of White Self Raising Flour Sifted ( you can use half wholemeal if you prefer)
2 tea spoons of baking powder
150grams of caster sugar
175ml water
50ml of fresh orange juice
6 table spoons of sunflower oil
1 vanilla pod or one teaspoon of vanilla essence
Good quality Orange Marmalade Jam

For the Topping
A little orange juice
one teaspoon of vegan margarine (I use Vitalite)
5 teaspoons of icing sugar, (you may need a little more)
A little bit of zest from the orange for decoration

Preheat the Oven to 180 or Gas Mark 4

Prepare a tray with cup cake cases

Mix together the dry ingredients, flour, baking powder, sugar, add the vanilla seeds from one pod or add the vanilla essence. Mix in the water and oil. Give everything a really good mix, making sure there are no lumps.

Using a dessert spoon put two spoonfuls of the mix into each cupcake case
Then using a teaspoon, spoon in one teaspoon of the marmalade into each case on top of the mixture.
Then again with the dessert spoon put a final spoonful of mix on top of the jam into each case.

Place in the oven and bake for approx 15 minutes. You can test them by using a cocktail stick, if it comes out dry then they are done.

Remove from oven and place on a cooling rack.

Once cooled make the topping.
Mix one teaspoon of vegan margarine with two teapsoons of orange juice. Slowly add the icing sugar until you get a smooth butter icing. Spread a little on to each cake and sprinkle with a little orange zest.

Perfect for a vegan dessert or just with a nice cuppa.

Mcennedy Cinnamon & Raisin Bagels

Vegan Cinnamon Bagels

A pack of four cinnamon and raisin bagels from Mcennedy ( a Lidl Supermarket own brand).  I like that this pack is separated into 2 sections which keeps them fresh for longer.  I thought these bagels tasted OK,  they were a little light on the cinnamon but they were fine,  I had mine with some vegan margarine for breakfast.    I have said a few times that Lidl seem to be trying really hard on labelling veggie foods,  I think they are worth checking out once in a while.  Their fresh produce is really quite cheap prices compared to other supermarkets.

Each  340gram pack of 4 bagels (separated in to 2 sections for freshness) is suitable for vegetarians, vegan as far as I can tell.   No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.  A good source of fibre,  sold in Lidl Supermarket.

Vegan Bake at Home Crusty Rolls

A pack of 6 part bake crusty rolls from Tesco.  These are really handy to keep in if you run out of bread or if you do not use much bread, as you can just bake as many or as few rolls as you like and keep the rest in the fridge until you need them.  I really enjoyed them,  they are very crusty and are perfect to tear and butter,  they go really nice with soups and stews or just as a side bread roll.   I do not eat much white bread but these are a nice treat with that fresh baked smell and taste.

Each pack of 6 rolls is suitable for vegetarians, vegan as far as I can tell.  The rolls take 10 minutes in the oven.  Per roll is 165kcal.  Sold in Tesco Supermarkets.

Tesco Cherry Tomato Focaccia

Vegan Tomato Focaccia

Sicilian cherry tomato and basil focaccia breads from Tesco.   It is nice to find a focaccia that does not have cheese plastered all over it.  This bread is white bread which is quite light,  the tomato topping is quite sweet like a pizza sauce.  It tastes quite good and is perfect to go with a salad or an Italian meal,  it is quite nice on its own.  It would work well with some vegan cheese sprinkled on the top warmed in the oven.

Each pack of 4 focaccia breads is suitable for vegetarians, vegan as far as I can tell.  Per roll is 140kcal. Sold in Tesco Supermarkets.

Tesco Sun Grown Trail Mix

Vegan Trail Mix Snack

A mix of brazil nuts, raisins, apricots, dried banana, papaya and coconut from Tesco.  I quite like this trail mix because it is really sweet,  I do think they should add some seeds to it and maybe another type of nut, but on the whole this is quite a good healthy snack.  Because of the sweetness I think children would enjoy this, so much better than most snacks out there.  It comes in a resealable pack which is handy because it is quite large,  perfect for sharing and for lunchboxes.  I like to nibble on this whilst watching a film.

Each 300gram pack is suitable for vegetarians, vegan as far as I can tell.  Per 30gram serving is 145kcal.   A good source of fibre.  Sold in Tesco Supermarket I found this is the wholefoods section.

Amoy Straight to Wok Thread Noodles

Vegan Ready Made Thread Noodles

Ready cooked thread noodles heat and serve from Amoy.  Made using wheat flour fine noodles that make a very quick meal, you can either microwave them for a minute or add them to your wok in a stir fry.  I like them in a soup,  or you can add them to vegetables and sauces,  they are really versatile and taste really good with whatever you decide to put them with.  These are much better than the dried noodles you can buy.

Each pack comes with 2 x 150gram ready to go portions.  Suitable for vegetarians, vegan as far as I can tell.  No artificial colours or flavours.  Per serving is 221kcal.  I bought mine in the cooperative supermarket,  but I think they are sold in all supermarkets.

Linda McCartney Mushroom & Ale Pies

Vegan Mushroom & Ale Pie

A pack of 2 mushroom and ale pies from the Linda McCartney range.  I have been looking for these for ages since they were launched but the shops in my area have not stocked them.  So I was very pleased when I found these in Tesco.  The pies are quite good,  the pastry is very nice and crumbly and holds it shape well,  the filling has a rich taste of mushrooms.  They are quite filling ideal to go with some vegetables and gravy or with a salad. You cook them in the oven from frozen for 30-40 minutes.   They also make the country pies which are very tasty.

Each pie is suitable for vegetarians, vegan as far as I can tell.  Per pie is 439kcal.   Sold in a pack of two,  they are sold in supermarkets and health food stores,  I got mine from Tesco.  Winner of the UK’s tastiest meat free dish.

Orgran Shortbread Hearts

Vegan Shortbread Hearts

Gluten and dairy free premium shortbread hearts from Orgran.   Traditional shortbread made without butter.  I thought these were OK,  I have never been a huge fan of shortbread though.  To my taste it was sweet and crumbly but a little dry in texture.   These are really good with a nice cuppa or they could make a nice gift as they are cut into little heart shapes.

Each 150gram pack is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  Free From Nuts, Soya, Gluten, Wheat, Dairy, Eggs, Yeast.   Per 100grams is 500kcal.  I bought mine in an independent health food shop.

Lazy Day Tiffin

Vegan Belgian Chocolate Tiffin

Belgian dark chocolate (free from) Tiffin from Lazy Day Foods.  This is a lovely tiffin.  The chocolate with the biscuit pieces and raisins are a classic combination,  it tastes really good and is perfect for an afternoon snack with a mug of tea.  My only slight negative is that it is a little dry,  but still it is very good.   I also like that this product is made in a dairy free environment so there is no chance of milk or eggs getting into the food.

Each 150gram pack has 5 pieces of Tiffin,  suitable for vegans, Free from Gluten, Wheat, Diary, Egg and Hydrogenated Fats.  Made in a Gluten, Wheat, Dairy and Egg Free environment.   Per 100grams is 488kcal.  I bought mine in an independent health food shop.
