Morrisons Chocolate Cookie Mix

Vegan Cookie Mix

A double chocolate chip cookie mix from Morrisons Supermarket.  This mix is designed to make six cookies and the recipe is vegan as long as you add a vegan margarine.  When I was making the cookies as per the instructions the mix would not come together it was too dry, so I had to add a little bit more water 25ml in total.  I used Vitalite vegan margarine.  The mix is very easy to make and cooks in just 15 minutes.

The cookies came out looking quite good,  they smell lovely.  I admit i slightly overcooked them which made them quite hard,  but the flavour was very good and I enjoyed them.

Each 275gram pack is suitable for vegetarians and vegan as far as I can tell.  Per sixth of the pack (one cookie) is 224kcal.  Sold in Morrisons supermarkets.

Redwood Ham Style Pineapple Pizza

Vegan Hawaiin Pizza

A meat and dairy free Ham & Pineapple pizza from The Redwood Co.  What a lovely idea,  these pizzas are great fun,  I love the fact that these pizzas are vegan.  The fake ham, pineapple, vegan cheese and tomato sauce work very well on the thick pizza base.  They remind me of the cellophane wrapped mini pizzas you can get in the supermarket,  but totally dairy and meat free.  The flavour is pretty good and the textures are also good.  The cheese melts and the pizza base is a lovely texture.  I am so chuffed we now have vegan pizza options.  This is a really fun product and I really like it.

Each 205gram pizza is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Meat & Dairy Free.  Per half a pizza is approx.  220kcal.  You cook from frozen in 12 minutes.  Sold in health food shops and on line.

Neal’s Yard Wholefoods Mini Bears

Vegan Jelly Bears

Gelatine free vegan jelly bears from Neal’s Yard Wholefoods.   I always like finding new sweeties as I have a sweet tooth.  This bears are quite good.  They are quite fruity and chewy and I enjoyed having them.  I like that they are labelled vegan friendly.   Perfect for sharing and good fun for children.

Each 100gram pack of mini jelly bears are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  No artificial colours or flavours. Per 100grams is 332kcal.  I bought mine in Holland and Barret.

Dragonfly Beany Curried Burger

Vegan Burger Curry Flavoured

An organic curry flavoured beany burger from Dragonfly Foods.   Made with soya bean and brown rice with curried spices.  I really like Beany burgers and this one is also very good.  The burger is firm but easy to bite into,  it does fall apart quite easily when cooking so make sure you use a large spatular rather than a fork when you turn it over.   The flavour is mild curry.  Great on a bun with some salad or with some chips.

Each 200gram pack of 2 burgers is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  Organic, Vegetarian Society Approved.  Per burger is 247kcal.  Sold in health food shops.

Walkers Szechuan Pepper Nuts

Vegan Coated Nuts

Chinese Szechuan Pepper coated peanuts from the Sensations Range of Walkers.  On the pack it says “The Spicy citrus tingle of Szechuan pepper gives way to a warming blend of cumin and turmeric.  Peanuts are covered with a crunchy flavoured wheat and rice flavour coating.”  I thought these coated nuts were OK,  the peanut is pleasant,  the crispy coating is light and the flavouring is more like a general curried taste.  Not too strong.  The peanuts are great for snacking and for a party food.

Each 155gram pack of nuts is suitable for vegetarians and vegan as far as I can tell.  Per 30gram serving is 143kcal.  Sold in supermarkets.

Food Doctor Wholesome Pot

Vegan Blugar & Quinoa Pot Meal

A bulgar wheat and quinoa wholesome pot with tomatoes, black olives and basil from The Food Doctor.   You make this very similar to a pot noodle, you add hot water to the fill line and wait for 10 minutes, stir and serve.   I thought that this vegan ready meal is OK,  it is quite strong in tomato flavour,  the bulgar wheat and the quinoa seemed perfectly fine.  I did like the sunflower seeds as these added a pleasant texture.  This is great for lunch time,  although it does have garlic in there, so maybe not so great for the office.

Each 70gram pot is suitable for vegetarians and vegan as far as I can tell.  Per pot is 303kcal.  Sold in supermarkets and health food shops.

Saf Shoreditch Closed

Vegan Restaurant Closed

I have had devastating news that SAF in Shoreditch London, a vegan raw restaurant has closed.  This was my favourite veggie restaurant and I am so sad to see it close.  They state on their website that they are going on to better things, but I am guessing that they were not making enough money at this location.  They are keeping their Kensington location open in the Wholefoods market but although I like it, the Kensington branch is more of a lunch spot rather than a fancy evening meal.

I have seen a few veggie places close recently including Eat and 2 Veg in Marylebone, Otarian in Soho, Zilli Green in Soho, Mrs Marengos in Soho and now Saf in Shoreditch.  If we do not support these veggie food places then we will lose them.

Vegetarian and vegan restaurants need support.  It is expensive to run a veggie place and the customers have high levels of expectations for the food, so it is not easy to keep going.

Non veggie restaurants that offer so called veggie food options cannot guarantee that there is no cross contamination of meat and dairy, as staff do make mistakes and not everyone understands veggie food, especially when it is not their main business.

Maybe I am an unusual vegan as I will only eat out in Veggie places.  I have worked in a commercial kitchen and I have seen first hand how hard it can be.

Please support the veggie restaurants and cafes or we will have so little choice.

An anti ageing hydrating firming serum from Green People.  This product is made with 96% organic natural ingredients.  The anti-ageing and hydrating toning serum is made without alcohol is designed for all skin types and is used for the face and neck and can be used as a primer under makeup.   This product is very pleasant to use,  it does not smell of much but it is gentle on the skin,  and as it dries you can feel your skin tightening up.  It is designed to firm the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

I really like that you can buy a reasonably priced vegan beauty product that is good quality.  It is made in Britain.

Each 50ml pack is Vegan Society Approved, Vegetarian Society Approved.   Organic  and paraben free.  Not tested on animals.  Sold in health food shops and on line.

Morrisons Quinoa Cereals & Beans

Vegan Quinoa Rice & Beans

A ready to eat pouch of quinoa, red rice, wild rice, kidney beans and spelt from Morrison Supermarket.  This is very easy to cook, you just microwave it for one minute and serve.  The mix was very dry for me and a little bland.  I drizzled it with some olive oil and sprinkled a little salt and pepper on it which improved it greatly.  The mix is very filling,  there did not seem to be that much quinoa in the mix,  although it said 41% on the pack.  The beans were OK and the rices mixed well with the other ingredients.  This would be fine if you do not like cooking, but I would prefer to make up some fresh quinoa myself which is very easy to do.

Each 250gram pack is suitable for vegetarians and vegan as far as I can tell.  Per 100grams is 179kcal.  Sold in Morrisons supermarkets.

Nakd Orange Infused Raisins

Vegan Orange Raisins

A pack of natural orange infused raisins from Nakd.  This is the second flavour of Nakd raisins that I have tried,  the cola flavour was just wonderful.  The orange flavour is quite pleasant.  I am not a huge fan of orange flavours so I did not enjoy them as much as the cola flavour.   The raisins are juicy and the orange zing tickles your tongue.  I like that this is a really healthy snack and is made with only natural ingredients.  Also each pack is One of your Five a day.

Each 25gram pack is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  Per pack is 75kcal.  Sold in health food shops and some supermarkets.

McCain Micro Chips

Vegan Microwave Chips

A pack of 4 boxes of straight cut chips that you cook in the Microwave from McCain.  These have been around for years.  I love chips, like most people I often cannot be bothered to cook them, and I would never trust a chip shop because they cook meat and fish in the same oil.  So it is nice to be lazy and have some instant hot chips from the microwave.

They do not taste as good as fresh chips, but they are so easy to make and they taste OK with some ketchup on them.  So they do satisfy that chip craving I sometimes get.  I also like that the portion is quite small, so then I do not pig out on them.  They also make crinkle cut chips which are equally as pleasant.

Each multi pack of 4 x 100 gram portions is suitable for vegetarians and vegan as far as I can tell.  Per pack is  156 kcal.  Sold in supermarkets freezer section.

Vegetarian Society Meat Free Manchester

Vegetarian Event Manchester

The Vegetarian Society have an event called “Meat Free Manchester” on Saturday 19th May 2012.  The event is in Albert Square,  Manchester City Centre.  Meat Free Manchester is one of the events planned for National Vegetarian Week 2012.

There are cookery demonstrations from Rose Elliot and the Cordon Vert Cookery School of the Vegetarian Society.  There will be lots of vegetarian foods to try for free and there will be burgers and fake fish and chips on sale.

The Manchester vegetarians get to choose their favourite veggie sausage and there will be lots of entertainment and veggie information available.

It looks like a fun event, so if you are close to Manchester I think the Meat Free Manchester event is worth a visit.

Oskri Quinoa Bar

Vegan Snack Bar

A gluten free quinoa bar from Oskri.  This bar is very similar to sesame snaps.  I think it is a little bit cheeky to call it a Quinoa bar as it only has 21% quinoa in it,  the rest is made up of sesame seeds, rice syrup and date syrup.  I do like the bar it is very sweet and quite crunchy.  I also like that it is labelled vegan very clearly.  Perfect for mid morning snacking.

Each 53gram bar is suitable for vegans and vegetarians, Lactose free and gluten free.  Per bar is approx. 215kcal.  I bought mine in an independent health food shop.

Wholebake Pistachio Flapjack

Vegan Pistachio Flapjack

A handmade flapjack with pistachio nuts from Wholebake.   I really like this flapjack,  it is wholesome and really satisfying to eat.  I like that it is not too sweet and sickly.  The pistachio is really good and is a great combination with the oats.   Perfect for when you need to take on carbs that release their energy slowly,  so ideal for taking on big walks, or for exercise.  They are very filling,  I can only eat half a one,  so I think they are good for sharing.

Each 100gram flapjack is suitable for vegetarians and vegan as far as I can tell.  Vegetarian Society Approved.   Wheat Free.  Per bar is 443kcal.  Sold in health food shops.

Vegan Travel Guide

Vegan Travel

As the holiday season approaches it is wise to plan your trip when you are vegan.  I have just discovered a really useful page on the Viva Website which is full of travel tips for vegans.  The page covers road travel, airport travel and other suggestions.

I did not know that when you are flying that you can usually get a vegan meal, this is a service that the airlines offer, if you request it.  I never bother to think about food when I travel because I know the choice is fairly poor, so I always eat before I go and take some food with me.
