A vegan cake shop with a separate vegan Gluten Free kitchen, in Hastings East Sussex, called 1066 Cake Stand have contacted me, so I thought I would give them a mention. If you have experienced this shop then please add a comment and share, as it is too far away from me to call in.
The cakes look wonderful, the vegan meringue I cannot wrap my head around because it looks like an egg version. My mouth is watering just looking at the pictures. Also Hastings looks very vegan friendly.
Here is what 1066 Cake Stand had to say:-
We have a “bricks and mortar” shop in Hastings, in East Sussex. Hastings is very vegan friendly, boasting a cafe, brewery, B&B and cakes shop amoung it’s exclusively vegan business, plus many other vegan owned/ vegan freindly enterprises.
I, Shelley, have been vegan since the mid 90’s, and in fact moved to Hastings to work for the vegan society, I never baked before I was vegan, but the craving for sweet treats led to some experimentation, and a passion for quick easy bakes with “normal” ingredients. For example, Shell’s chocolate cake recipe uses only 6 ingredients, all things one can buy in a corner shop, and can be made in a microwave. Kev has been baking vegan cakes also since the mid 90s, and is a bit of a “sugarcraft expert” having learnt cake decorating skills from his Mum, from whom he has inherited a lot of cake decorating equipment as well as a passion for making beautiful sugarcraft roses.
We started out with a cake stall at a local market, then we started doing a bit of “trade” and after 2 years we opended our cake shop.
We have written 2 recipe books. 1066 Cake Stands Compendium of Cakes, and 1066 Cake Stand Goes A Little Bit Savoury. Both are completly vegan and feature our own recipes plus adaptations of family favourites, such as Kevs mums “everything less” fruit cake, which is vegan plus gluten, wheat, sucrose & fat free, and Shells mums gluten free yorkshire puddings.
One of the reasons that we opened a shop was that we wanted a dedicated gluten free kitchen. We have several customers who or coeliac or otherwise wheat/ gluten intollerant, and want to be able to assure them that cross contamination is not an issue. We have had vistitors from all over the UK, and mainland Europe after our goodies, most recently a couple from Germany, who made a special trip to Hastings after finding us on Happy Cow.
As well as selling locally we also sell mail order through our website.
