Vegan Hot & Spicy Jerky

A meatless vegan jerky made with shitake mushrooms in a Hot & Spicy flavour from Primal Strips.   These strips are not my cup of tea,  so I have asked Paul to try it as he is quite a fan of the Primal Strips in other flavours.  He enjoyed it,  slightly different from the other seitan or soya based strips this one is made from mushrooms.    It has a very firm and dry texture and is not chewy.  The flavour is similar to the other Primal Strips jerky but with a lot more heat.

Each 28gram bar is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  Each strip is 96kcal.   Sold in health food shops and on line.

Primal Strips Thai Peanut

Vegan Jerky

A meatless vegan jerky seitan in Thai Peanut flavour from Primal Strips.   I have reviewed a few of the meatless jerky flavours from this company and they are pretty good and addictive.  This one has an aniseed flavour stands out more than peanut,  but a pleasant taste and good texture.   It is not too firm, drier than the other ones I’ve tried in their range and it has some background heat that builds over time.  Overall it was very enjoyable.

Each 28gram strip is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  Per strip is 74kcal.  No Cholesterol.   10grams of protein.  I bought ours from an online vegan retailer.

Primal Strips Teriyaki Jerky

Vegan Teriyaki Jerky

A meatless vegan jerky seitan strip of Teriyaki flavoured Jerky.  I have reviewed a couple of these and this variety is very similar to the Texas BBQ and the Hickory Smoked.  This version is a bit thicker and not quite as moist as the hickory smoke version.  Again it’s sweet and sticky,  no noticeable heat.  these do all taste very similar, with only slight variations between them – very good jerky though.  Paul really likes these Jerky strips,  he slowly became quite addicted.

Each 28gram strip is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  No artificial preservatives,  all natural.  I bought mine in the Wholefoods Market in London,  but you can buy it on line as well.

Primal Strips Meatless Jerky

Vegan Meatless Jerky Strips

A Texas BBq flavour meatless vegan jerky strip from Primal Strips.   This is not my idea of fun,  so I asked my favourite guinea pig Paul (my husband) to try them out.  He thought that they were very chewy and sticky,  also that they were quite sweet and juicy.  He has never had meat jerky before but he thinks that this would fool many a meat eater.  The look of this meatless jerky was enough to put me off, but Paul said while he thought it was OK, it is not something he would want to have again.

Each pack of 28gram strip of jerky is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.  No preservatives, all natural.  Made from Soy.  Per pack is 91 calories.  Sold on line and in some health food shops.

Tofu Jerky Recipe

Vegan Tofu Jerky Recipe
Block Firm Smoke Tofu
2 tbsp Shoyu/soy sauce or similar
dash vegan worcestershire sauce (optional)
1 tbsp maple syrup

Note: dehydrating intensifies the smoke flavor, oak smoked tofu can end up tasting like an ash tray so best to use a milder smoke such as beech.  Personally, I prefer the Cauldron Foods Organic Beech Smoked Tofu in terms of taste and final texture.

Mix the ingredients excluding the tofu together in a rectangular dish
Slice the tofu into 5mm thick slices
marinade the tofu in other ingredients overnight
turn over the tofu and marinade for an hour on the other side
place on non-stick sheets in a dehydrator at 45 celsius/113 Fahrenheit

turn the tofu when it turns dark brown (approx 2 hours)
When it browns on this side (approx 2 hours) transfer to perforated sheet (polyscreen) and dehydrate for a further 2-4 hours according to taste

In my opinion, this tastes better the next day after being stored in the fridge.

I’ve not tried this with a conventional oven, but can’t see any reason why this wouldn’t work with the oven set to the minimum heat and adjusting the times accordingly.
